It can be difficult to achieve a truly modern floral print, but designer Minna Niskakangas masters it with the Pastelli pattern. Fitting to the name, it features a soft shade of blue contrasted by black and white on a neutral grey backdrop. Made from 100% acrylic-coated cotton, the fabric works well when crafted into a tablecloth or placemat set. Acrylic-coated cotton makes minor messes easily wiped clean, but also allows it to be machine washable for more major spills. It feels coarser than untreated cotton, but still feels like fabric and not like vinyl of earlier coated fabrics.

I already had this Pentik pattern in a table runner so I knew I’d love it. I am using it on my outdoor patio dining table. The table is cast aluminum and starting to show it’s wear but not quite ready for a new paint job, so this coated tablecloth fits the bill beautifully. I haven’t had many spills to wipe up yet so I’ve not formed an opinion as to it’s wipe-ability. It is much lighter than the old-school coated fabric. Time will tell.

I ordered a yard to see if I liked the fabric enough to order a longer section to make a table cloth. It drapes nicely and it is wide enough to hang generously over sides of my oval table. I plan on ordering two yards, as one piece, a table cloth. I also lived the modern pattern, very Finnish, in blue, gray and black.
