Maija Isola's popular Unikko pattern was created in the 1960's during the height of modern design and has since remained one of the most iconic patterns of all time. Delving into oversized design and deconstructed shapes led Isola to create large than life patterns. Large black poppy flowers are printed over a white background to create a vivid and graphic print that impresses any design connoisseur. Made in Finland from 100% cotton, it's coated in acrylic to serve in spots that might get a little messy - such as a tablecloth or placemats. Acrylic-coated cotton makes minor messes easily wiped clean, but also allows it to be machine washable for more major spills. It feels coarser than untreated cotton, but still feels like fabric and not like vinyl of earlier fabric. Plus, the eco-friendly treatment helps to avoid wrinkling when folded!

This is the best and most beautiful tablecloth or resistant fabric ever. I discovered Marinekko with my finish friends through its design and I fell in love with the practical side plus design of it. Perfect tablecloth for a house with kids that need help keeping the house beautiful!!! Love it!

My perfect tablecover!
September 24, 2017
I cannot say enough good things about both the Marimekko PVC fabric, and this pattern in particular. We use it to cover our dining room table, which serves as a homework spot, art workspace, and casual dining table for our family of 5. I have been buying Marimekko PVC fabric for years to use as a tablecover, because the patterns are both lovely and striking, and the fabric is tremendously practical. It is heavier weight than the plastic/coated tablecloths you see in your run-of-the-mill fabric store, which means that the fabric stays in place on the table and doesn't need to be clipped down. It drapes rather than sticking out the way a cheaper plastic-coated fabric would. While I own several Marimekko PVC fabric patterns, and switch them out now and then for a bit of change, the Unikko Black is my favorite. It manages to look both fun and sophisticated, and I have gotten so many compliments on it. From a practical standpoint, this fabric is so easy and practical to use as a tablecloth. Order enough yardage to cover your table, trim any excess with scissors, and then just wipe clean with a soapy cloth whenever needed.
Pros
  • Not a cheap plasticky tablecloth! This fabric is heavyweight, drapes well, and feels much nicer.
Cons
  • Expensive of course...but has been well worth every penny.

In a yard of fabric, is there quite a bit of white on each side, or is the fabric covered with the floral design with only the white between the flowers?
1 Answer
Hello, There is approximately 2-3 inches of white edging on each side of the fabric.

I would like to use that to re-upholster my dining chair cushions which is about 21" x 21" in size. It looks like i would need 2 yards of this fabric to do 6 chairs. However, my concern is about the "repeat" of the pattern. You info says 37" repeat, I am wondering if there is any apparent "gap" between the floral pattern or is the pattern more or less continuous across the width of the fabric. I just don't want to show too much "white gap" between the pattern repeats for the amount of fabric I purchase. Thanks so much for your help.
1 Answer
There are not white gaps between repeats, the pattern is continuous. Please keep in mind, however, that Marimekko recommends using upholstery fabric for this type of project rather than PVC fabric. PVC is used more for tablecloths and areas with slightly less wear and tear than chair covers.
